8 Easy DIY Natural Cleaning Recipes To Clean Your Whole House

DIY natural cleaner recipes

When you ditch conventional cleaners with their toxic formulas and synthetic fragrances, you might feel a little lost. However, you can also easily clean your entire house with easy DIY natural cleaning recipes!

And it’s really not so hard either. To make these natural cleaners, you need simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and Castille soap, which are toxin-free, safe for your health and affordable.

If you want to save some money and clean your home without unwanted toxins, here are the only cleaning recipes I use in my home (and they leave my house spotless, seriously!).

Several awesome non-toxic cleaning products, like Branch Basics or Thieves by Young Living, make the switch super easy, too!

All-purpose cleaner

I haven’t had to buy an all-purpose cleaner in a very long time. And it’s just because I make my own that is super inexpensive, easy to make, and cleans great.

My all-time favourite all-purpose cleaner on hand year-round is this simple DIY orange vinegar cleaner.

DIY Orange Vinegar Cleaner

All you need to do is add several orange (or another citrus fruit) peels to a glass mason jar and fill to the top with white vinegar. Let it infuse for 3-4 weeks, strain it into a glass spray bottle, and that’s it!

I love the orange vinegar cleaner so much because it doesn’t smell vinegary at all. The citrus peels leave a nice, gentle scent, and it works on pretty much anything. I use it on my countertops, windows and mirrors, and bathroom.

Another super easy DIY all-purpose cleaner recipe is this one, which you can add your favourite essential oils to:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Optional: 10-20 drops of essential oils (my favs are lemon, lavender, eucalyptus)

Instructions:

Mix all the ingredients in a glass spray bottle and shake to mix. It’s perfect for countertops, glass surfaces, kitchen appliances, and bathrooms.

Glass Cleaner

One thing that irks me is when cleaners leave my windows and mirrors streaky… this I had to solve. I now use my simple DIY orange vinegar cleaner or this quick recipe—both are streak-free.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • Optional: 10-20 drops of essential oils

Instructions:

Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well to mix. Spray onto glass surfaces and wipe clean with a natural cloth.

Sink, shower & Tile scrub

When I first went toxin-free with my cleaning products, I struggled to find a way to clean my shower and tile well, especially because these areas often have more grime and build-up. The funny thing is that baking soda turned out to be the simplest and cheapest DIY natural cleaning recipe for this.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup liquid castile soap ( I use Dr. Bronner’s unscented)
  • 1-3 tablespoons water (as needed)
  • Optional: A few drops of essential oils (e.g., lemon, tea tree, or lavender)

Natural Mold Cleaner

Bathrooms are often exposed to a lot of moisture and humidity, which happens to be a happy breeding ground for mold and mildew, especially if you don’t ventilate your bathroom often.

Cleaning with bleach is not only toxic and potentially harmful to your health, but it can actually encourage some molds to grow and spore even more.

Here is an all-natural mold and mildew cleaning recipe with vinegar and tea tree oil that helps kill mold spores with natural sanitizing and anti-fungal properties. I will spray this cleaner after scrubbing my shower, tiles, and grout with the baking soda scrub mentioned above.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 10-15 drops tea tree essential oil
  • Optional: A few drops of lemon essential oil

Instructions:

Mix the white vinegar, water, and tea tree oil in a glass spray bottle and shake to combine. Spray the natural mold cleaner onto the affected area with mold or mildew. Allow the spray to sit for at least 15-20 minutes. Use a scrub brush or sponge to scrub away the mold and mildew, rinse with hot water, and dry with a clean cloth.

This natural mold cleaner is safe on tile, grout, countertops, walls, and shower curtains. The vinegar helps to kill mold spores and remove stains, while the tea tree essential oil provides natural antifungal and antimicrobial properties.

Since you’re working with mold and the spray smells quite strongly, remember to wear gloves and ventilate with open windows or a fan when using this cleaner.

toilet bowl cleaner

You don’t need to spend so much money on toilet bowl cleaners! Not to mention, most commercial ones contain bleach and synthetic fragrances. Talk about a headache (literally!).

All you need to clean your toilet bowl is simply baking soda and vinegar.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Splash of white vinegar
  • 5-10 drops tea tree essential oil

Instructions:

Sprinkle baking soda into the toilet bowl and pour or spray some vinegar and a few drops of tea tree oil. Let it sit for a few minutes and fizz, then scrub it with a toilet brush. Flush to rinse.

This easy, non-toxic toilet bowl cleaner cleans just as well without the potent bleach smell.

Stainless Steel cleaner + Polish

If you have stainless steel appliances, you’ll know all about fingerprints—hah. You don’t have to spend money on expensive cleaners and polishes because a simple olive oil and vinegar mix removes grime and polishes and leaves your stainless steel sparkling!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup olive oil or mineral oil
  • Optional: A few drops of lemon essential oil for fragrance

Instructions:

Mix the white vinegar and olive oil in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of lemon essential oil if you want a nice scent. Shake well before each use to thoroughly mix the ingredients. Spray the cleaner onto a natural cloth or directly onto the stainless steel, and wipe in the direction of the grain to remove fingerprints, smudges, and dirt. Buff the stainless steel with a clean, dry cloth in a circular motion for a streak-free shine.

The vinegar helps to break down grease and grime on the stainless steel, while the oil provides shine and helps to repel fingerprints. This cleaner is ideal for appliances, sinks, and other stainless steel surfaces in your home.

Non-Toxic Floor Cleaner

Your floor gets a lot of traffic. Dust, dirt and all sorts of things get tracked in from outside. You don’t need any fancy shmancy floor cleaners to get it clean and fresh. All you need is non-toxic dish soap and some water (and optionally vinegar).

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon of warm water
  • 2-3 drops of liquid dish soap
  • Optional: 1/2 cup white vinegar (depending on your flooring)
  • Optional: 10-15 drops of essential oils (such as lemon, peppermint, or lavender)

Instructions:

Mix all the ingredients in a bucket. Use a mop or cloth and clean as usual, ensuring not to over-wet the floor.

This cleaner works for a variety of hard floor surfaces, including tile, laminate, and hardwood. The vinegar and dish soap help cut through dirt and grime. If you’re washing tiles or laminate, vinegar is generally safe. Just be careful with some hardwood, as vinegar and essential oils may be damaging.

I personally add vinegar to my tiled floors but on my hardwood I just use a warm water with a couple drops of dish soap.

Non-Toxic Room Spray

Having a house that smells nice is like the cherry on top after a deep clean. However, most commercial room and linen sprays contain toxic synthetic fragrances that can be extremely irritating to the body.

You can make your own non-toxic room and linen spray with just three ingredients!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons vodka or rubbing alcohol (helps the scent to disperse and evaporate more quickly)
  • 15-30 drops of your favourite essential oils (lavender, peppermint, lemon balm, eucalyptus)

Instructions:

In a glass spray bottle, combine the water and vodka or rubbing alcohol. Add your favourite essential oils to the mixture and shake the bottle well to ensure all the ingredients are well mixed.

Shake the bottle gently before each use and then spritz it lightly into the air or onto linens, pillows, curtains, upholstery, or carpets to freshen up the room and add a delightful scent.

Always do a spot test on an inconspicuous area before spraying! Some materials can be reactive, so it’s always best to test a small patch somewhere first.
