14 Best Non Toxic Candles for a Cozy, Chemical-Free Home
Here’s a roundup of some of my favourite non-toxic candles that are 100% free of synthetic fragrance, phthalates, paraffin, and other toxins.
If you’re on a journey to create a cleaner, healthier home, candles are one of those sneaky swaps that make a BIG difference.
Before I started paying attention to the products I used at home, I never even thought twice about my candles… and I loved my candles (guilty of using the infamous pumpkin scented ones… oops!).
But, the unfortunate truth is that many commercial candles are made with paraffin wax (a petroleum byproduct) and synthetic fragrances which can release harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and phthalates into your air… which aren’t exactly great for you.
But don’t stress! You can still enjoy candles at home, just swap them for these cleaner brands!
Common Harmful Ingredients to Avoid in Candles
- Paraffin Wax: A petroleum byproduct that releases known carcinogens like benzene and toluene when burned.
- Synthetic Fragrance (“Fragrance” or “Parfum”): Often a combination of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are linked to allergies, hormone disruption, respiratory irritation, headaches and more.
- Phthalates: Commonly used in synthetic fragrances to make scents last longer; known endocrine disruptors linked to reproductive and developmental harm.
- Dyes and Colorants: Artificial dyes can release toxins when burned; opt for candles without added colours.
- Metal-Core Wicks (Including Lead): Some candles use wicks with metal cores, which can release heavy metals like lead into the air. Always choose 100% cotton or wood wicks.
