9 Simple Ways to Reduce Your Toxic Load Today

Let’s be real—trying to live a “clean” life can feel so overwhelming. Between confusing ingredient labels, social media advice overload (!), and the occasional “should I throw out everything I own?” spiral… it’s a lot.

I still get overwhelmed after years of trying do the whole low-tox lifestyle.

But here’s the good news: lowering your toxic load doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing, expensive, or stressful. Small steps really do make a big difference!

If you’re confused about what I mean by toxic load, here’s everything you need to know about what toxic load is and why it matters for your health.

So let’s keep it simple. Here are some easy, no-pressure ways to start reducing your toxic load today:

1. Open Your Windows

Indoor air can actually be more polluted than outdoor air (wild, right?).

One of the easiest things you can do is open your windows for even just 10–15 minutes a day to let fresh air in and toxins out.

I like to do it first thing in the morning after waking up for a fresh start to the day.

Another way to improve your air quality at home is to get a high-quality air purifier.

2. Ditch Fragrance (When You Can)

“Fragrance” on a label is often a catch-all term for hundreds to thousands of hidden/undisclosed chemicals.

Try swapping out things like candles, air fresheners, scented laundry products and personal care products for fragrance-free or naturally scented options (like essential oils or beeswax candles).

There’s lots of simple ways to make your home smell great without synthetic fragrances!

I’ve talked at length about the problem with synthetic fragrance and the negative effects it can have on your body. Artificial fragrances can cause symptoms ranging from headaches, to respiratory symptoms to hormone disruption.

So, really if you’re going to make one change on this list, I would strongly encourage this one!

If you’re in need of some inspo for fragrance-free products:

Ditch the synthetic scented products – your nose and hormones will thank you!

3. Filter Your Water

Many people focus so much on drinking lots of water and staying hydrated, but they rarely think about their water quality.

Tap water can contain things like chlorine, heavy metals, microplastics, and even trace pharmaceuticals (yuck!).

Especially if you live in a large city or your water comes from a public water system, investing in a high-quality water filter is essential.

This is the water filter I recommend! It filters over 83+ contaminants including the major ones like lead, arsenic, chlorine, PFAs, nitrates, pesticides, microplastics and more. I love that it’s portable (doesn’t require any extra plumbing or installation)!

Hydration is important—but clean hydration is even better.

4. Switch to Non-Toxic Cleaning Products

Cleaning your house shouldn’t require a gas mask.

Many commercial cleaning products on the market are concoctions of harsh chemicals and ingredients that wreak havoc on your body. Sure, they clean but at what cost.

On top of that, they’re usually heavily fragranced.

These days, there’s really no reason not to be using non-toxic cleaning products especially when brands like Truly Free, Branch Basics and Thieves by Young Living exist.

My personal favourite? Truly Free, hands down. Their products are 100% toxin-free, made from plant-based ingredients, synthetic fragrance-free, affordable and they clean JUST AS GOOD.

So, start with one product at a time and swap out your cleaning supplies. An easy switch that makes a huge difference!

5. Simplify Your Skincare

You don’t need a 10-step routine to have great skin.

In fact, fewer products = fewer questionable ingredients.

Look for brands that are transparent about their ingredients and avoid things like parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrance. (Tip: If you can’t pronounce it and it sounds like a science fair project… maybe skip it.)

My absolute favourite skincare brand is Three Ships Beauty for two very simple but essential reasons:

  1. They are 100% toxin-free, plant-based, and transparent with their formulas.
  2. They work!

I also really love this whipped tallow as a moisturizer – it’s 100% natural and truly heals the skin.

6. Eat Real Food

The fewer ingredients on the label, the better. Focus on whole foods (fruits, veggies, grains, quality proteins) and try to cut back on ultra-processed stuff when you can.

Cook from scratch when you can. Become a pro at reading labels.

It’s not about being perfect—just about choosing high-quality to fuel and nourish your body!

7. Add Some Houseplants

Did you know certain types of houseplants can help purify the air inside your home?

Some of the best air purifying houseplants for removing VOCs and filtering air:

  • snake plant
  • peace lily
  • spider plant
  • rubber plant

Adding plants to your home is not only a fantastic way to clean your air but it’s also good for reducing stress!

8. Regular Movement

One of the body’s main detox processes is through the lymphatic system. Your lymph fluid carries waste, toxins, and excess fluids out of your tissues—but unlike your blood, it doesn’t have a pump (like the heart) to keep it flowing.

That’s where movement comes in!

Simple things like walking, stretching, bouncing on a mini trampoline (aka rebounding), or even dancing in your kitchen can help get your lymph moving and support natural detox.

You don’t need a fancy workout—just keep your body moving in ways that feel good to you.

9. Sweat it Out in the Sauna

Sweating is one of the body’s most underrated detox superpowers (even though it’s often so villainized)—and saunas make it even better.

Whether it’s a traditional sauna or an infrared one, regular sessions help your body release toxins through your skin, support circulation, and even promote relaxation (which, hello, is also great for detox!).

Start slow if you’re new to it—just 10–15 minutes a few times a week can make a difference.

10. Don’t Stress About It

Ironically, stress is toxic too!

Your mental load matters just as much as your physical one. When you hold onto stress your body gets stuck in ‘fight or flight’ mode and impedes your body from functioning optimally.

Remember: progress over perfection. You don’t need to throw out your entire bathroom cabinet or move to the woods to make a difference. Just take it one swap at a time.

Key Takeaway

Reducing your toxic load is all about creating a healthier environment for your body to thrive. And the best part? You’re in control. Start small, stay curious, and celebrate each change you make—because every little step adds up to supporting your health and wellbeing!
